You have your checklists to use, so go through these first off. Remember, you will have a choice of questions.

- Rivers or Coasts

- Settlement (not population)

- Tectonic or Climatic hazards

Attached are the powerpoint checklist/guides from the Revision workshops. I will also get copies of Coasts and Rivers from Miss Whiting (who I’m sure you’d like to thank for being so helpful).

He has very kindly put together a load of resources for your controlled assessment, there is also a post which will be useful to any of you that need secondary information / points of view since he used his twitter / blog network to gather opinions.

Don’t forget you can always email me if you need anything (jdebens@priory.portsmouth.sch.uk) and there are workshops every Wednesday in Rm18.

Remember, the exam Q is ‘Why is there a need to protect the coast in your chosen area?’

You will need to create your own key questions to investigate, follow the enquiry process to collect data on the field trip, then analyse this data to come up with a conclusion about the question. Remember to keep evaluating the different techniques you use as well as this is important, keep a reference page/bibliography of any secondary resources you use, and acknowledge/reference the source of any extra information/images you get (e.g. if you copy a photo from flickr then acknowledge it, don’t pretend it’s your own).

The area is Hengistbury Head, Dorset. You gain most of the points from your own data collection but you can supplement this with secondary research of your own. You should collect your own observations, photographs, etc. .

Climatic hazards includes tropical storms (aka hurricanes / cyclones) and droughts.

Again, make sure you know LEDC and MEDC examples.

You should be able to compare and contrast the impacts of and responses to the hazard between LEDCs and MEDCs and be able to explain the reasons for this.

For this unit you need to know:

- causes of the hazard

- primary & secondary effects of the hazard

- how hazards can be managed

- how the impact & management of hazards compares between LEDCs and MEDCs

Types of hazards you should know:

Tectonic: Earthquakes (Haiti and Japan) & Volcanoes (Iceland and Montserrat)

Climatic: Tropical storms (Hurricane Katrina and Cyclone Nargis) & Droughts (Australia and Sahel)

You will need to be able to describe & explain how and why retail service provision has changed over time, how this has affected land use, and the consequences for quality of life.

Make sure you are clued up on the different keywords you need to understand too.

Key things to consider with retail service change: rise of out-of-town retail parks/shopping centres, hypermarkets, e-tailing, ethical shopping, MNCs, clone towns.

Here are the files relating to the lessons on redevelopment. Remember, your case studies for redevelopment include: Gunwharf Quays, London 2012 & Greenwich Millennium village.

You will need to supplement these resources with your own research. They are a rough guide only and for the higher grades you must do your own case study work. Use the links to help.

- sustainability of changes

So, we have started the Settlement unit of your course. Throughout the course you will need to have an understanding of:

- how settlements develop over time,

- the different ways that land is used,

- how urban areas develop and what patterns there are,

- and how settlements + urban areas compare between MEDCs and LEDCs.
